Perch Fishing Tips: Finding and Catching European Perch

Perch are the most forgiving predator for spinning anglers. They live almost everywhere, feed through most of the year and often hunt in groups, so where you catch one, you can often catch several.

Meet the perch

The European perch (Perca fluviatilis) is a striped, spiny-finned predator of lakes, rivers, reservoirs and even brackish lagoons. Small perch feed on insect larvae and zooplankton; from a modest size they switch to small fish, including young perch. They are found throughout most of Europe and much of northern Asia.

What makes perch special for anglers is behaviour. Small and medium perch school, often hunting together and driving fry to the surface. Large perch become more solitary and cautious, holding near structure and feeding less often. That split shapes how you fish for them.

When perch feed

Perch are daytime hunters. They feed mostly in daylight, especially in the morning and late afternoon, and are much less active in full darkness. The GetCatch forecast reflects this with steady morning and evening lifts throughout the year:

Midday (12-15)+2+4+6+10
Afternoon (15-18)+4+4+8+8

A few seasonal notes:

  • Spring: perch spawn in spring, laying ribbon-like strings of eggs on plants and submerged branches. Once fishing is permitted, they feed actively in shallower water.
  • Summer: watch for surface activity, gulls diving or fry jumping. That is often a perch shoal pushing baitfish up.
  • Autumn: perch gather in bigger groups and move towards deeper edges as the water cools. Many anglers catch their biggest perch in October and November.
  • Winter: the middle of the day is usually best, and slow, small presentations win.

How to find a perch shoal

  1. Look for life. Birds working the water, fry scattering at the surface and other anglers catching are the best clues.
  2. Fish structure edges. Drop-offs, the edges of weed beds, rocky banks, bridge supports and harbour walls.
  3. Keep moving until you get a bite. Perch are rarely spread evenly. Make a few casts and move on if nothing happens.
  4. Stay when you find them. After the first fish, cast to the same spot again quickly. A shoal often stays for a while.

Best lures for perch

The GetCatch guides list four core lure types for perch:

  • Soft plastics: small shads, worms and creature baits from 2 to 3 inches.
  • Micro jig: tiny soft plastics on 1 to 5 g heads, fished with short hops along the bottom. One of the most consistent perch methods.
  • Spinners: size 1 to 3, retrieved just fast enough to turn the blade.
  • Small spoons: cast far to reach fish breaking the surface.

Perch respond strongly to contrast and flash. Natural colours work in clear water; bright, chartreuse or orange colours and patterns with a black back stand out in coloured water. See the lure colour guide for a quick chart.

Ultralight tackle

Ultralight spinning makes perch fishing fun and effective: a 1.8 to 2.4 m rod with a casting weight up to around 7 to 10 g, a 1000 to 2000 size reel, thin braid and a short fluorocarbon leader. If pike are present, you will occasionally lose a lure. Some anglers accept that, others use a thin titanium leader at the cost of a few bites.

Perch and other predators

Perch share water with pike and zander, and the same day can favour one over the other. Perch keep biting through the day when zander wait for dusk. When perch go quiet in bright light, a slow soft plastic near the bottom can still pick up a pike.

Keep a record

Perch locations are often surprisingly consistent from year to year. Logging where and when you found a shoal in the catch journal is the fastest way to build your own perch map.
