Fishing in Kyiv: Spots, Species and What Catch Reports Show
Kyiv is one of the few capitals where you can catch pike within sight of the city centre. This page summarises the catch reports on the GetCatch map for Kyiv and the surrounding region, so you can see which waters, months and lures have produced fish.

Lure types mentioned
Two things stand out. First, pike dominate the reports: most were caught spinning, and the lure types mentioned most often are soft plastics and wobblers. Second, the reports cluster in spring and autumn; at the time of writing, April, September and October have the most reports. That matches what Kyiv anglers would expect for predator fishing and is a good reason to plan autumn trips now.
These are reports from anglers, not a survey of fish populations. Popular, easy-to-reach waters naturally collect more reports than remote ones.

The Dnipro and its channels
Most of the city's predator fishing happens on the Dnipro and the side channels and bays around its islands. Embankments, island shores and the mouths of bays give access from the bank. The main river has current and depth; the bays and channels are slower and warmer, which is where pike often hold in spring and early autumn. As water cools in late autumn, predators tend to move towards deeper water near the main channel.
City lakes
Kyiv has many lakes on both banks, especially on the left bank (Desnianskyi and Dniprovskyi districts) and in Obolon. They are reachable by public transport and fish best early and late in the day. Expect pressure from other anglers at weekends.
Rivers outside the city
Small rivers such as the Irpin and the Desna upstream of Kyiv appear in reports too. Smaller water often means lighter tackle: an ultralight rod and small lures are a good starting point for perch and chub.
A season-by-season view for Kyiv predators
| Season | What to expect | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Predators move into warming shallows after spawning. Spawning restrictions apply in spring, so check what is open before you go. | Shallow bays and channels that warm first, once fishing is permitted. |
| Summer | Warm water pushes pike deeper and makes midday slow. Perch and zander can be good at dawn and dusk. | Weed edges, shaded banks, deeper water near the main channel in the evening. |
| Autumn | Falling water temperature and pre-winter feeding make this the best predator season for many anglers. | Bay mouths, drop-offs, island tips and the edges of dying weed beds. |
| Winter | Activity slows. On open water, the warmest part of the day is usually best. | Deep, slow water; ice fishing only where ice is safe and permitted. |
How to use this page for a trip
- Pick a water from the list and open it on the GetCatch map to see the individual reports.
- Check the Kyiv fishing forecast for the days you can go and pick the best window for your target species.
- Choose lures based on what worked in the reports and on water clarity. Our lure colour guide helps with the second part.
- Log your trip, even a blank, in the catch journal. Blanks are data too.

Rules and safety
Fishing in Ukraine is regulated by the State Agency of Melioration and Fisheries. Spawning-season restrictions, protected zones and catch limits change and differ by water, so check the current rules on darg.gov.ua before your trip. In Kyiv region, also respect any access or security restrictions on banks and bridges. Do not fish from places where it is prohibited, even if a report on the map was made there in the past.
